It’s been a very busy and eventful week. Totally unproductive but then I did warn you before hand. I don’t usually tell you about all my personal stuff, I normally tell you everything in relation to my business, bags, fairs, etc. Sure I do get personal about it all, I mean I tell you when I am frustrated or when I am happy, I even tell you about when I’m proud. But this entry will be even more personal, this is all about my holiday!
My sister Cynthia, is an artist and is the one who inspired me to start making bags. She makes them in Canada and sells them in shops and in fairs there. But her real passion is her printing. She just spent a whole month producing in a studio in Belgium. She will be selling these at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition in July, so if you live near there you should go check out her work. You’ll actually see it before me; it had all been meticulously packed up so I couldn’t see any of it.
At the end of her month in Belgium, her boyfriend (also an artist) came to meet her and then my husband and I went to meet them. We had planned on doing a little road trip then coming back here, to Frankfurt so that they could see where we lived. And maybe visit a bit of the surroundings. At the last minute my husband found out that he had to go to Barcelona for work and the idea for the four of us to drive down was born.
What a week! On the Saturday we drove (just the two of us) to Brussels to meat up with them. We went out for a meal that evening and were truly ‘had’ in a tourist trap. The food turned out to be expensive and bad! But then we did a bit of a pub crawl which was great. The next day we got up early and had breakfast/lunch in Luxembourg city! I even managed to find a little bakery I had been too about 5 years ago that makes the best meringues ever! We then drove to Lyon… We had a short look around but by this point it was raining and we were all starving. So we checked into a Formula 1 hotel. They are the cheapest hotels ever; €30 for up to three people! We watched the football and had a pick nick on the bed. Mmmmmm, the wine and cheeses in France are definitely the best!
The next day we drove to Barcelona. Wow, what a city. It was all very impressive!
Much better than the pictures I’ve taken…

After two days there we headed up the coast for a half day on the beach, pool and camping…
Then it was already time to head home.
It was a very, very long trip back. We even got stuck in the road blockades in France!

My poor husband, he was the only one to drive the whole way, plus he had to work while in Barcelona!
Once home we treated him to a few beers to make up for it! We showed them around the city and even visited a few galleries as they are both artists. Before they came I had been worried what Cynthia would think of my bags, I mean she had given me the original patterns, sure I’ve changed most of them, but not all. She was even generous enough to give me some prints when I first started. We aren’t in any competition in any way, she is in Canada and I am in Germany. My market is here in Frankfurt and on the internet throughout Europe mostly. She sells in shops in Quebec and Montreal as well as in fairs there. But it was still very generous of her to share everything, basically her lively-hood with me. So when she said she liked my work and that she even wanted to trade one, I was really moved. And relieved! I would so love to live near her so that we could work together. Though saying that, she has been making bags much longer and is much more established, I’m still starting out.

Anyway, I hope you liked this little personal touch… Now you know what I get up to when I’m not sewing.
